Before Seve Ballesteros died last year, his ambition was to leave a legacy that would be as impactful in the field of brain cancer research as it was in the world of golf.

We chose to support this ambition in 2011 by nominating the Seve Ballesteros Foundation as our chosen charity. Through a £1 donation from every entry fee, and a collection at the Grand Final, we raised a fantastic £1200. This year, we’re supporting the Foundation once again and hope to raise even more funds for vital brain cancer research.

In 2012, the Seve Ballesteros Foundation, together with Cancer Research UK, will be funding the first ever clinical trial of a promising new cancer vaccine to treat glioblastoma, one of the most common forms of brain cancer.

Scientists think the immune system can see cancer cells as being ‘different’ in the same way that it recognises bacteria and viruses as being dangerous. But it isn’t able to mount a strong enough response to destroy the cancer. The vaccines are designed to treat cancer by boosting the immune system so it can recognise and destroy cancer cells.

This early trial is the first step in discovering whether the promise of this cancer vaccine translates into an effective treatment for people with glioblastoma. If successful, this innovative new way of treating brain tumours could become a powerful new weapon in the fight against cancer in the future.

The Golf Classic is the UK construction industry’s most successful golfing tournament and is celebrating it’s 20th birthday in 2012. Attracting golfers of all abilities from every corner of the industry, the competition provides an excellent opportunity to make friends, network and forge new business relationships while enjoying a round of golf.

Sponsors of the 2012 event include Marley Plumbing & Drainage, Rockfon and Tarkett. We will also once again be raising funds for the Seve Ballesteros Foundation with a £1 donation from every entry fee. Working in partnership with Cancer Research UK, the Foundation helps fund vital brain cancer research.

The Golf Classic is a six round knock-out competition that offers each two-ball team the chance to secure a place at the Grand Final in October 2012, which will be held at the beautiful Marriott St Pierre Hotel and Country Club near Chepstow.

The Championship Old Course at St Pierre has previously staged fourteen European Tour events, with past winners including Seve Ballesteros, Ian Woosnam, Greg Norman and Bernhard Langer. The course was remodelled in 2008 by Ross McMurray, who also designed the 2010 Ryder Cup course, and will provide a real test of golfing skill for the Finalists.

The Golf Classic is open to all those employed full or part-time by a non-manufacturing organisation in the UK construction industry (except Northern Ireland). To be in with a chance of winning the 2012 Grand Final, simply call 01892 752300 or go to www.thegolfclassic.co.uk where you can register online or download an entry form to take part.

You can now also follow the Golf Classic on Facebook at www.facebook.com/thegolfclassic.
